Teaching, play by play

Glenn Rustay has had the odd opportunity to see himself teach. A fifth-grade teacher at Garden City Elementary School in Pierce City, Fla., Rustay has always been an advocate of using technology in the curriculum and with his students. He was recently chosen by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards to participate in the Digital Edge, a training program sponsored by Apple Computer Inc. and other manufacturers that encourages the use of technology in teaching.

Through the program Rustay learned how to use a digital video camera and edit the resulting footage. With his newfound skills, he videotaped himself in his classroom during lessons in which he incorporated various kinds of technology. For his final project, Rustay edited the teaching sessions, which, he says, was an eye-opener. "You're editing yourself and you're learning quite a bit as well. Actually being able to watch yourself teach, you're learning at the same time."
