The Organization for Unreasonable Thinking wants to teach you just how productive a lack of logic can be. out seeks business leaders with a desire for corporate-level reinvention by asking "What would happen if you changed your reasonable approach to business?"
Started by Paul Lemberg, executive coach, futurist and author of "Faster Than the Speed of Change" (Akiba Press, 2000), out proposes that unreasonableness can offer a whole new perspective on how to lead.
"All original thinking comes from being unreasonable," says Lemberg. "And that's where corporate USA gets it all wrong: Reasonable executives approach their plans and goals based on prior year's results," he explains. "Trying to plan the future based on past results is foolish. Everything in our environment is in total flux. Why should this year's results be anything like last year?s?"
So how can backward thinking rocket you forward? "If your goal is to break new ground, to cause something fresh and meaningful to happen, the only reasonable thing is to be unreasonable. Basing your actions on past experience only perpetuates those experiences," says Lemberg. "Free yourself of history. Reinvent your situation and make it up from scratch."
In elucidating its members with the standards of illogic, out claims a dedication to the discovery of new ways to think, act and be in business. When you join, the membership form (www.lemberg.com/out) notifies you that while most organizations begin with a clear program or detailed agenda, "This isn't that." Instead, out seeks members who will chart the direction of the organization themselves. Reasonable people need not apply.
