Use it or lose it. Generally, adults won't retain training unless it's continually and consistently reinforced. This can take the form of reference tools, incentive programs and compensation packages, and formal and informal coaching. We make sure there's a plan for reinforcement in place before we begin training so expectations are clearly set, resources defined, and accountability standards articulated and understood by everyone involved. Audiences pay more attention when they know up front that they are expected to utilize their training, will have the resources to do so effectively and will be rewarded for it. But the key to making sure training sticks is effectiveness—there's no better reinforcement than success.
