VideoBank today announced that the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business (GSB) has employed the company's VideoBank Encode / Logger as well as the VideoBank Web-Express at the school's Hyde Park Center to record classroom lecturers and guest seakers and then make those recordings available to students via the World Wide Web.
Twelve classrooms at the GSB Hyde Park Center now include integrated cameras for classroom recording. Video from the cameras is captured in MPEG
format by the VideoBank Encode / Logger and then transcoded, usually to Windows Media - format, for the Web playback application. During recording,
technicians log descriptive information about the specific lecture, such as the class number, professor, subject matter, etc., which is attached as metadata to the recording for easy search and retrieval of the material by students later. Video file storage is provided by a Dell server, with 500-GB online storage and a terabyte offline.
Chicago GSB Associate Director of Audio Visual David Gulbransen said, "The system is incredibly easy to use, with a straightforward Web interface to schedule recordings. And the online Web interface that students use for viewing the lectures is so intuitive that it has never been necessary to offer any formal training. Compared to the tape-based system that we used
previously, this is a quantum leap ahead as far as quality, accessibility,
and ease of use."
The VideoBank system has been in use at the Hyde Park Center since 2005, recording during peak periods up to six classrooms simultaneously five days per week. Now the school is in the process of installing the same VideoBank system in 12 classrooms at its downtown Chicago Gleacher Center facility as a remote encode, store-and-forward system linked to the centralized
infrastructure at the Hyde Park Center.
"Ease of use is a key feature of our system and especially important in this type of educational application, where there will be a nearly constant
flow of new users from semester to semester," said VideoBank President and CEO Louis Siracusano Jr. "Additionally, the system is easily expandable, so
for instance, after initially deploying the centralized encoding infrastructure at the Hyde Park Center, adding the remote installation at the GSB Gleacher Center was no problem at all."
