Training Today: Social Media for Leaders

When asked about the barriers to success in implementing social media tools for leadership development, more than 40 percent of survey respondents said not all leaders/learners are comfortable using the tools.

Development DimensionsInternational, Inc. (DDI) recently surveyed 181 HR executives to learn more about how they were using social media for leadership development. The survey revealed that about one-half of responding organizations are not yet using social media as part of their leadership development initiatives. And those who are utilizing tools aren’t using them in a blended manner.

According to the survey, discussion boards ranked highest with 27.6 percent of respondents using them, followed by blogs at 17.1 percent, content rating/ranking at 12.2 percent, and internal activity streams/networks (Chatter, Yammer, etc.) at 11.6 percent. Microblogs were last with 2.8 percent.

When asked about the barriers to success in implementing social media tools for leadership development, more than 40 percent of respondents said not all leaders/learners are comfortable using the tools. Approximately 20 percent of respondents noted it is too much work to drive application/usage and cited the lack of a unifying platform where learners can access the tools.
