Training Today: Social Media at Work

Twitter is the most popular social media site accessed at work, according to a survey of 1,100 U.S. employees by SilkRoad.

Some 75 percent of 1,100 U.S. employees surveyed by SilkRoad reported accessing social media at least once a day from their personal mobile devices while at work—regardless of their companies’ social media policy. Other findings from SilkRoad’s “Social Media and Workplace 2012 Report” include:

  • Most companies allow some type of access to social media at work: Some 43 percent of respondents’ organizations have completely open social media access; 24 percent have monitored access; and 16 percent said they have no access.
  • Twitter is the most popular social media site accessed at work: Some 70 percent use Twitter and 65 percent use Facebook, while only 19 percent use corporate intranets. Less than 10 percent use Jive, Salesforce Chatter, or Yammer.
  • Companies’ efforts to guide employee use of social technology are mixed: Only 23 percent received a specific social media policy from their employer, and the same percentage reported having no policy at all. Some 17 percent were issued informal guidelines, and less than 10 percent received social media training.
  • Employees use personal mobile devices frequently during work hours to access social media: Some 60 percent check social media multiple times throughout the day on their mobile devices; 75 percent check once a day or more.
