Rising Stars

The 2016 Emerging Training Leaders are leading lights at their organizations, shining examples of how strategic-minded, results focused, and people-oriented Learning and Development (L&D) professionals can inspire, innovate, and excel.

These 25 2016 Emerging Training Leaders inspired and engaged their organizations with stellar leadership skills, business acumen, and innovation.

Beyond Lean In

The vision of a corporate boardroom table filled with equal parts men and women, or maybe even dominated by women, has mostly not been realized to date. According to the Center for American Progress, while women hold almost 52 percent of all professional-level jobs, American women still lag behind men in representation in leadership positions.

Women may need to “lean in,” as Sheryl Sandberg famously advises in her book by that title, but companies also need to meet women halfway. Some experts and corporations are taking a proactive approach to spurring more women to the top.

Learning Under Fire

Do you find meeting your department’s goals an uphill battle? When budgets are small, and learners unengaged, it’s hard to feel like the victory of educated, high-performing employees is close at hand.

The military is known for its discipline and strategic thinking. Lessons from Gettysburg, Normandy, and other military battles can forge strong, effective leaders.

When You Meet for the First Time

By Jason W. Womack, MEd, MA

When you’re meeting with someone—for example, a new customer or a potential vendor—you will get more from that meeting if you understand learning preferences. During a discussion, I once heard a client say, “I have a clear picture of what you’re talking about.” I did not understand—we were on the phone, and I hadn’t sent anything to look at ahead of time.

Training Today: Improve Your Odds of Change Success

Even under the best of circumstances, nearly 70 percent of all change initiatives fail. And that’s why most organizations never realize the benefits they hoped for with their new culture change, software implementation, or training initiative.

While there are many documented reasons why change initiatives fail, the overriding reason is that change sponsors do not involve or address the concerns of the people affected by the change.
