McCarthy Building Companies, Inc.

McCarthy Building Companies, Inc., is one of the oldest and largest commercial construction companies in the U.S. Founded as a family owned business in 1864, McCarthy became 100 percent employee owned in 2002. This ownership culture, together with the firm’s core purpose to be “The Best Builder in America,” encourages continuous improvement. The firm’s employee-owners strive to develop to their full potential and are motivated to help others do the same—all in support of delivering an exceptional experience for clients and business partners.

As a company, McCarthy focuses on three strategic anchors:

  1. Operational Excellence
  2. Top Talent
  3. Client Focus

These also act as a guidepost for the Training team to align training solutions against. The Training team has worked tirelessly to collaborate with the C-suite to better understand these key business drivers and implement innovative solutions that deliver measurable results. Recent results include:

  • An industry-leading Quality program has helped McCarthy achieve a more than 90 percent reduction in costs incurred related to water incidents.
  • Sales training based on “The Challenger Sale” by Matt Dixon and Brent Adamson and focusing on both a deep understanding of a client’s business and the ability to deliver impactful solutions has netted more than $940 million in new sales.
  • A New Employee Orientation program that focuses on culture and interaction with top executives earned a 4.9 out of 5.0 net culture promoter score and achieved an 8 percent increase in retention.

To achieve results such as these requires active involvement from top company leadership, and the commitment to training at all levels of McCarthy filters throughout the organization. Training is delivered through the firm’s comprehensive McCarthy Build U individualized training and development program, blending virtual classroom training, instructor-led classroom training, action learning, online training, and on-the-job training with mentoring, peer-to-peer leadership development, and more.

At McCarthy, the Training team has been able to effectively leverage employee training and development as a strategic differentiator and competitive advantage for the company. The power of this approach has positioned McCarthy as a leader in this space and a proud Training Top 10 Hall of Fame honoree.
