OLC Hits the High Notes
Training’s 2014 Online Learning Conference (OLC) struck a chord with attendees as they learned how to make e-learning live up to its promise with a mixture of technology and storytelling. Held at McCormick Place in Chicago, September 22-24, the conference’s HighNoters (we call them that because they helped us take online learning to the next level) showed the 465 attendees how to marry the power of emotion and the thrill of technology to keep learners coming back for more.
In addition to certificate programs, hands-on clinics, breakout sessions, and speed-sharing roundtables, OLC featured the first Allen Interactions Conference; the inaugural Top Training Videos (Ttv) awards ceremony at Buddy Guy’s Legends Club (see opposite page); the debut of the Gamécon card game; and tours of McDonald’s Hamburger University, Ace Hardware Training Store, and the Naval Stations Great Lakes Recruit Training Command boot camp.

2014 Top Training Video (Ttv) Awards
A wizard, elf, satyr, and other mythical creatures took center stage as LRN’s whimsical “Diversity and Discrimination in Hiring Practices: The Chosen One” video earned the No. 1 spot in Training magazine’s first Top Training Videos (Ttv) awards program. The other winners were as follows:
No. 2: “The Biggest Loser Awards,” Cohn Creative Group
No. 3: “Performance Review: Code Red,” VideoArts
No. 4: “Bridgestone Consumer Tire Education Program Motivational Video,” SweetRush
No. 5: “Attack of the Fatigue Monster,” L-3 Communications
Participants at Training’s Online Learning Conference voted at a special event held September 23 at Buddy Guy’s Legends Club in Chicago to determine the rankings of the Top 5 videos in the 2014 Ttvs.
Companies were asked to send in a two-minute video clip of one of their training programs. Each company could submit two videos. Nearly 140 video clips were submitted. Eight of the magazine’s 2013 Emerging Training Leaders judged the submissions first:

The 10 clips that earned the highest scores were provided to singer/songwriter, author, and social media innovator Dave Carroll (who created the “United Breaks Guitars” video), who chose the Top 5. OLC attendees then watched those five clips and voted for their favorite at Buddy Guy’s Legends Club. (Turning Technologies provided the audience response system for the voting). The one with the most votes earned the No. 1 spot. Each of the Top 5 received a crystal award at the event.
