Many employees claim they learn best while doing, so they prefer to dive right in and learn as they go when they get a new job or take on new responsibilities. But the most successful and quickest learning on the job takes place when there is a formal on-the-job training (OJT) program—a fact many organizations and managers fail to take into account.

There is a large disconnect between indoctrinating people to tools of the trade and the myriad elements they will need to assimilate for their own futures. Training vendors sell what they have to provide...not what the constituencies or workforces need. Emphasis must be placed upon properly diagnosing the organization as a whole and then prescribing treatments for the whole, as well as the parts.

There is a difference between how one is basically educated and the ingredients needed to succeed in the long term. Many people never amass those ingredients because they stop learning or don’t see the need to go any further. Many people think they are “going further” but otherwise spin their wheels.

Many organizations give tips, tools, and techniques that can help employees enhance their performance and businesses increase their revenue, but most of the time, articles are read and seminars are attended, and that is where the learning stops. It’s not a mistake that the saying goes, “Old habits die hard.” The key to successful learning is training reinforcement.

The training world continues to be all abuzz about return on investment (ROI), but there’s much discussion about how to effectively and affordably do that. Before you design your training, begin with the end in mind. In other words, determine what your business success looks like before you start. You can do this by getting a multi-level perspective on the situation and then determining the scope, severity, and value to the company.

Prior to the training, create a forum for communication between participants and trainers. For example, create a Facebook Group with restricted privacy settings or member-only LinkedIn Groups. Continued communication after training allows you to assess participant attitudes and hear about successes or frustrations. The relaxed feel of these sites overcomes the challenges of finding time for a conference call as a post-training activity due to conflicting work schedules.

According to the “Handbook of Human Performance Technology,” there is a trend to move training as close as possible to the work situation, both to save time off the job and to increase the likelihood that the worker actually will use the new knowledge and skills. Embedded training—which provides instruction in one content area while the participants are working in another—removes the learning obstacle of theory’s passivity when stripped of its context.

The country is flat, which is said to be a reason for Dutch values such as openness, transparency, and honesty. The Dutch consider training and coaching to be important tools for professional development. Many trainees have busy jobs and take training very seriously. They want to maximize the return. The higher the education level of the trainees, the more they feel responsible for their own learning.

My mentor, colleague, and friend Joyceann Cooney-Garippa always says, "When one door closes, another opens." In my case, I'm thrilled that the door opened to Training, Act II, allowing me to reprise my role as editor-in-chief of Training magazine, albeit from a slightly different stage as I'm now working from home. After 18 years of hours a day commuting to New York City by train, I have to say this is a welcome change.
