Yet many employees and leaders still struggle to understand how AI works, when to trust it, and how to use it responsibly. This lack of AI literacy mirrors earlier disruptions, such as the rise of social media or smartphones, when society rushed to adopt tools without fully preparing people to use them wisely.

For HR and training leaders, equipping employees with both technical and critical-thinking skills to thrive in an AI-driven workplace can seem daunting. The solution lies not just in teaching them how to use AI tools, but in fostering a companywide culture of transparency and developing their ethical reasoning and transferable skills. To make this training process less intimidating, here are three AI training challenges we’ve seen and three solutions you can implement right away.

Challenge 1: A Workforce That Uses AI Without Understanding It

Most people interact with AI daily, whether through predictive text, workplace tools, or customer service chatbots. But few truly understand what’s happening “under the hood.” This creates risks: employees may put too much trust in AI outputs, miss biases, or apply the tools in ways that compromise accuracy and ethics.

By wrongly assuming that AI is “alive” or inherently correct, workers may default to passive consumption rather than active verification. Without AI literacy, companies risk not only errors and inefficiencies but also reputational harm.

Solution 1: Making AI Visible Through Modeling and Practice

The first step is to shift employees’ perception of AI. It’s not an invisible force; it’s a visible, learnable tool. That doesn’t mean every employee needs to understand machine learning at a code level—just as drivers don’t need to know how a fuel injector works. Instead, training should focus on these essential functions:

  • Transparency practices: Teach employees to ask, “Where is this information coming from? How might it be biased?”
  • Verification habits: Encourage a “trust, but verify” mindset when using AI-generated outputs.
  • Critical modeling: Leaders and trainers should set a good example with their own AI use by showing when they rely on AI, how they validate results, and where they set boundaries.

This visibility normalizes AI as a workplace tool while reinforcing that human judgment remains essential.

Challenge 2: Traditional Tasks That Don’t Translate

For example, if an AI tool produces a misleading analysis, learners can identify potential data gaps, generate alternative prompts, and track the reasoning path that could lead to the error.

This approach can encourage critical thinking, curiosity, and problem-solving—skills we believe are among the most valuable in today’s world. It also shifts the emphasis from catching misuse to creating AI-resilient learning experiences.

Challenge 3: Employees Feeling Unprepared

When an exciting new technology arrives, it can be tempting for companies to invest heavily in tools while underinvesting in people. Hardware alone doesn’t transform practice—effective training and ongoing support do. The same applies to AI. When employees feel unprepared or fearful of AI, adoption stalls. Worse, they may revert to old habits or misuse the tools.

Solution 3: Building a Culture of Ongoing Professional Learning

Sustainable workforce development requires more than a one-time training session. Instead, companies should invest in these ongoing efforts:

  • Sandbox time provides space for employees to explore AI tools in low-stakes settings.
  • Peer collaboration builds communities of practice where colleagues share successes, challenges, and strategies.
  • Coaching and iteration offer continuous support rather than one-off workshops.
