With the learning management system (LMS) market predicted to reach nearly $8 billion by 2018, it becomes increasingly important to evaluate organizations’ use of these systems, benefits and challenges, and future investment plans.
Software Advice conducted a survey of 155 Human Resources (HR) professionals who currently use an LMS at least monthly. Key findings include:
- The most used LMS software feature is trainee testing (cited by 73% of users), followed by training administration (68%).
- LMS software positively affects the organization of content and training efficiency for 99% of users surveyed.
- The top challenge for LMS users is the integration of LMS software with other systems, cited by 32% of survey respondents.
- The vast majority use LMS software on their desktop computers (89%) and laptops (76%), while just 19% access these solutions via smartphone.
- 90% of survey respondents plan to maintain or increase their investment in LMS software over the next year.

Compiling data from a survey of more than 100 LMS users across a diverse range of industries, Capterra’s “LMS Industry User Research Report” likewise offers some insight into users’ perspectives, including:
- 87% of people use a Web-based LMS, while only 13% have an on-premise or installed system.
- Users spend 59% more than they expect to on their LMS (the average annual spend is $70,614).
- Live/video conferencing tops the list of most desired features lacking in current LMSs.
- LMSs have the greatest impact on overall cost of training, according to respondents.
- 26% of people are dissatisfied or very dissatisfied with their current LMS.
