1 in 3 Amerian office workers would rather go on an awkward first date than attend an onboarding orientation for a new job, according to “The Quest for Meaningful Work,” a recent survey of 2,001 office workers commissioned by ServiceNow and conducted by Edelman Intelligence. Nearly 80% of respondents experienced issues when starting a new job. Many said they received no essential training in their onboarding (33%), while others didn’t feel like their job responsibilities were well defined (28%) or they had IT issues (26%).
Put simply, businesses need to do a better job when it comes to onboarding. When asked what would make a great first day at a new job, respondents identified the following:
- Being assigned a buddy: 58%
- Walk-through of key processes: 58%
- Time to review onboarding materials: 47%
- Having a welcome lunch: 40%
- One-on-one time with coworkers: 38%
- New computer/equipment: 36%
