Productivity Coach’s Corner: Make Their Day!

Over the last 20 years of serving as a leadership coach, I’ve learned it is essential to help people remember they make a difference.

“How do the people around you know they make a difference?”

I teach an eight-day Leader Development Course 15 times a year for groups of 60 leaders or so. I begin each small group session by asking that important question.

Many stare back at me for a couple of moments. Most of them make up an answer or reply, “Oh, I’m sure they know.”

That may be true, but they need to hear it. Over the last 20 years of serving as a leadership coach, I’ve learned it is essential to help people remember they make a difference. So ask that question and see how the momentum builds.

Here’s something else you can do to make someone’s day: Write them an “Awareness Card.” In about 100 words, share what you saw the person do recently that made a difference. Describe the scene as you remember it, share what you felt as you watched it unfold (and how you’re feeling after the fact), and explain how they are a part of a team doing great work.

The best part? You’ll know that people around you do make a difference!

Go…Create Momentum!
