In response, the Módulo Corporate University (MCU) was created to teach staff, clients, and partners the intricacies of Módulo’s project management methodology and GRC management solutions. To be able to quickly build engaging content for MCU, Galvão’s team builds e-learning courses with Claro—a fully HTML5-compliant, Web-based e-learning authoring platform from Ottawa, Ontario-based dominKnow Inc.
Easy Content Sharing, Reuse, and Collaboration
“Prior to Claro, we used PowerPoint (PPT) to create and manage our presentations. It was nearly impossible to ensure all instructors were using the same content and weren’t making arbitrary or non-standard, unapproved modifications,” says Galvão. “Using PPT for large-scale training across various locations is not sustainable. Vast amounts of money and time were wasted. Building effective courses and sharing agreed-upon content with many users is not what PPT is for.”
Claro is an affordable authoring solution that is scalable when compared to other training alternatives, Galvão says, noting that his team researched cloud-based learning content management solutions and chose Claro after a cost-benefit analysis. Among Claro’s collaborative features, the Módulo team identified easy content sharing and reuse, as well as purpose-built collaboration tools as key.
Using Claro, Galvão’s team now saves months of work. The team deems invaluable Claro’s exercises, hotspots, animation, and interaction options. “The exercises help our students to remember Módulo concepts and to learn the system,” says Galvão. Attaching documents and other resources to the training program is also a valued feature.
No More Silos
In the long term, using PPT for training led to “content silos” (files stored on personal workstations) and “latest-version” issues (a user could be working on or using a file all day and then find out that file was not even the most current version). When Módulo moved to a cloud-based solution, the company quickly found that redundant content and other inconsistencies that cause loss of time, money, and team motivation, became easier to deal with—and generally disappeared.
Authoring the Módulo Way
On average, a Módulo online course is developed from start to finish in 45 days. Course development includes the creation and review of a storyboard, content development in Claro based on the storyboard, a lengthy and thorough editing process followed by another review, and then publication. Typically four people (a content author, an instructional designer, a graphic designer, and a reviewer) collaborate to produce each new Módulo e-learning course. The Módulo team believes Claro’s collaborative features (its Media Library and automated, tracked reviewer process, for instance) are necessary in order for Módulo to produce new content with current resources.
Since many of Módulo’s new courses are updated versions of older ones, the team generally uses “version one” as a template to create version two—reusing most of the content (including shareable learning objects) to quick-start the development process. In this way, the company can avoid significant e-learning design costs and create consistent, easy-to-up-date content.
The courses are published and managed through the Docebo Learning Management System (LMS). Claro is fully SCORM compliant, so integration with the Docebo LMS (or any SCORM compliant LSM) was easy and the products worked together seamlessly.
Beyond Training
The Módulo Corporate University team also provides support to other Módulo departments wanting to produce Web learning content. A Módulo Information Security Policy e-learning course recently was completed in this fashion. The course, produced in cooperation with the Security Office team, helps Módulo employees (end-users) follow company policy accurately. Since Módulo has offices in São Paulo and Brasília, as well as Rio, security policies must be scalable, easily communicated, and updated.
