Front-Line Management 101: Tech Doesn’t Always Yield More Time

Technology can be a friend to leaders, but you have to balance it with getting the job done, or its “benefits” can take over!

With all of the gadgets, apps, artificial intelligence, and other tech surrounding our lives in the 21st century, our work lives should be more productive. However, many managers find they have even less time than before to develop themselves, to train others, and to help their teams achieve their objectives. Here are a few strategies that can help:

  1. Time blocking: Review how you spend your time in a week. How many hours do you spend in meetings? Answering e-mails? Make an effort to cut out 10 to 15 percent of that time. For example, pick one meeting and send someone else on your team to attend and report back with notes. (https://the-happy-manager.com/tips/time-wasters/)
  2. On-demand leadership skills improvement: Just because you lead doesn’t mean you know everything about leadership. Use Leadership 9 Box to improve your skills on your time in less than a month. (https://leadership9box.talentlms.com/index)
  3. Go back to the beginning: If you find you’re surrounded by too many tools (Slack, Outlook, Chrome, Explorer, Paycor, etc.), shut them down. Studies show it takes up to eight minutes for you to get back to work after opening an e-mail. If you do that every time a message pops up, how much time are you sacrificing?
