Workforce development programs are designed to maximize the capabilities of your employees so your company can optimize success. But how do you get the most out of your workforce program before and during its implementation?

5 Essential Tips to Maximize Your Workforce Development Partnership

1. Think About the Fit

Begin by thinking about which program partner will satisfy your short- and long-term goals. Identify ways to address immediate needs, but don’t stop there. Define as many priorities as you can, and select the partner that best satisfies those priorities, with as much tailored to your organizational needs as possible. Be selective. Think about what potential partners specialize in and how they fit your priorities.

2. Be Honest

Aim high and identify your loftiest goals. Include wish-list items you think might not be possible. Set a high bar for getting a customized program, and don’t settle for a cookie-cutter approach. You might be surprised at what you can achieve when you set high goals for your program partner. Provide constant feedback and communicate what’s working and what isn’t.

3. Be Open

Your success depends on honesty, openness, and hearing different perspectives—both internally and externally. Be approachable, so participants are motivated to fully contribute to the process. This attitude results in getting a lot more done.

4. Bring Different Voices to the Table

Listening to different ideas and perspectives is essential. Spend time considering what areas need to be addressed and who can address them. Your management and Human Resources team may be involved every step of the way, but it’s essential for front-line workers and subject matter experts to have their voices heard. A well-rounded training program focuses on improving soft and hard skills.

5. Promote Integration

When your program is customized, it reflects your company culture, as well as past training materials. Integrating the new training program creates consistency and eliminates mixed messages. Consistency reduces uncertainty. That approach empowers employees to improve their performance. Look to the Japanese and Korean car manufacturers for best practices concerning programmatic excellence.
