Productivity Coach’s Corner: Ask Both Whys

First, ask them what got them started or got them here; the origin story. Then ask about the vision they see; the retention story.

Asking “Why?” can facilitate a meaningful conversation at work AND in life. However, please be mindful. It can come across as “interrogative” when someone repetitively asks “Why?” during a conversation.

The next time you are talking with someone about purpose, be sure you discuss both whys. One is the “Because of…” That is the why that got them started or got them here; the origin story. The second is the “So that…” This one gets them to tell you about the vision they see; the retention story.

Asking someone to talk more about their two whys will show you’re listening…more.
