Productivity Coach’s Corner: Connect More

The key is to grow your network by engaging in effective introductions.

The basic principles of networking are not a secret to you. Get out there, meet new people, and follow up with them. But that’s often easier said than done. Do you find yourself at events, wondering why you signed up in the first place?

Have you been wary of handing out your card, worried that someone will just try to sell you something?

The key is to grow your network by engaging in effective introductions:

1. Connect with new people. “Who do you know who…?” is a question that can change your life. When struggling with something to learn or do, ask your network to introduce you to someone they know who would meet you for a video chat or a phone call.

Ask for introductions to the people they know. But not just anyone they know. Be deliberate about building this network. Consider the things you’re working toward and on, and the professional skills to improve. Find one person a month to meet for a #CoffeeChat and give yourself the chance to expand, learn, and perhaps even contribute.

2. Connect people in your network. “Who do I know who…?” is the question to ask after meeting someone. Consider the people in your network you know who may not yet know each other. When you introduce people, it shows that you have a big network, and, that you’re willing to help others.

Give the “gift of introductions”—it could change both your lives for the better.
