Deep Dish Learning

Taking a culinary cue from Chicago’s famous pie, Training’s Online Learning Conference 2018 offered a multi-layer experience that appealed to all the senses.

Hungry to experience the latest training technologies and make new connections, Online Learning Conference 2018 (OLC) attendees headed to Chicago October 8-10 to feast on hands-on product demos in the Training Test Kitchen, nuggets of wisdom from improv experts at Second City’s headquarters, and workforce culture insight from sparks & honey. Also in the mix were 55 breakout sessions, plus eight learning labs, six vendor demo sessions, and the 5th annual Top Training Videos (TTVs) awards ceremony showcasing training filmmaking prowess.

The conference boasted three additional ingredients: co-located events GamiCon; The Allen Experience; and Innovations in Training (IIT), a collaborative experience that brought participants to sites across the Windy City—such as The Chicago Connectory, Accenture, Northwestern Simulation at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, Begyle Brewing Co., and Columbia College Chicago—and included innovators from IDEO, Samsung and Bosch.

Talk about a recipe for success!

2018 TTV Winners

Safety played a starring role in the 2018 Top Training Videos (TTVs) as both the #1 awards in the in-house and vendor-produced categories went to clips with a focus on employee well-being: “Quick Quiz! What’s the Most Important Number at Gilead?” and “Fentanyl: The Real Deal.”

The awards were given out during the conference kickoff October 8 following the opening Training Test Kitchen demos. This is Training’s fifth year conducting the Top Training Videos (TTVs) awards program. Training received nearly 70 two-minute video clip submissions. Judging the submissions were:

  • Ellen Finkelstein, PowerPoint MVP, EllenFinkelstein.com
  • James Goldsmith, Learning Architect, Accenture
  • Hanan Harb, Instructional Design Expert, DPR Construction
  • Steve Haskin, Chief Creator, Industrial Strength Learning
  • Michele Israel, Learning Experience Designer, Michele Israel Educational Writing & Consulting
  • Matt Pierce, Learning & Video Ambassador, TechSmith Corp.
  • Sam Rogers, President, Snap Synapse LLC

The three videos that earned the top scores in each category—inhouse and vendor-produced for a client—were shown to OLC 2018 participants at the awards ceremony. Participants voted via text for their favorite clips (based on factors such as engagement, creativity, and effectiveness), and the clips were ranked first, second, and third based on those votes. Each of the three winners in both categories received crystal awards created by Pelucida for Training.
