Training APEX Awards Best Practice: JLL’s Work Dynamics Skills Academy

The Work Dynamics Skills Academy consists of four parts: Learning Journeys, 3E Development Guides, Assessments, and Career Development Plans.

APEX Awards

JLL’s Work Dynamics Skills Academy (WDSA) is a comprehensive approach to skill development that emphasizes developing transferable skills to empower individuals in the ever-changing workforce. It helps individuals understand the competencies required for their roles, assess their strengths and weaknesses, and create personalized development plans to advance their careers.

Some 86 percent of the real estate firm’s employees have participated in the program.

Program Details

The Work Dynamics Skills Academy consists of four parts: Learning Journeys, 3E Development Guides, Skill Assessments, and Career Development Plans.

  • Learning Journeys provide learners with a roadmap of minimum competencies required for their roles, as well as maximum performance requirements. They deliver content through a combination of online modules, workshops, and self-study materials. Evaluation includes assessments and feedback to measure progress.
  • 3E Development Guides map the Experience, Exposure, and Education (3E) needed for each role. Key competencies are listed, giving learners a clear direction for their professional development.
  • Skill Assessments ask colleagues to rate themselves based on eight core skills that have been chosen for the business area. Ratings from 1 to 5 indicate the level of proficiency. Assessments help identify strengths and gaps in competencies for targeted development. This approach utilizes lateral competencies Skill Assessments, which focus on skills that can be applied across different departments and business lines, differing from traditional assessments that only assess skills specific to a particular role (vertical competencies).
  • Career Development Plans guide individuals through skills needed at different proficiency levels. They recommend specific courses, certifications, and projects for ongoing learning and growth. Regular evaluations and discussions with supervisors or mentors assess progress.

The Learning Journeys, 3E Development Guides, Skill Assessments, and Career Development Plans, and additional learning resources all can be found in a centralized Work Dynamics Learning Hub.

Participants are encouraged to stay engaged with the WDSA by participating in community of practice sessions, attending events, or joining industry-specific groups.

Results

As a result of WDSA, the Work Dynamics Learning Hub drew 35,000 views, and JLL saw a 3 percent increase in the utilization of Career Development Plans. JLL also saw an 8 percent increase in internal promotions and job mobility and a 1.8 percent decrease in attrition.
